In Argentina, flour made from genetically modified wheat, which is drought-tolerant, has started to be commercialized. The results of incorporating this technology into wheat were presented during a meeting organized by the company Bioceres.
Bioceres reported that they are currently working with 27 mills and planning to incorporate more in the short term. This new technology was developed through the work of Raquel Chan, a researcher from CONICET, who discovered a drought tolerance gene in sunflowers. This discovery facilitated the transfer of the gene to soybeans and wheat.
In recent years, Argentina became the first country in the world to approve and consume genetically modified wheat despite numerous complaints, legal actions, and even a precautionary measure that ordered the suspension of its release in the province of Buenos Aires. This is because the cultivation is associated with ammonium glufosinate, an herbicide five times more toxic than glyphosate.
